Stew Crew! Trail Maintenance: Defining the Tread at Eaton River Preserve

  • Eaton River Preserve East River Road Skowhegan, Maine, 04976 United States (map)

Are you interested in trail maintenance beyond lopping and litter removal? The next step is tread work.

The tread is the surface people actually walk on. Unlike corridor maintenance, which focuses on keeping vegetation out of the trail, tread work focuses on the trail itself- the solid earth people walk on. Treadwork involves leveling uneven footing, removing roots and stumps, improving drainage, defining trail edges, and in some cases widen sections to better accommodate users.

Good tread makes trails safer, more comfortable, and more accessible for a wider range of visitors.

Join us for an introduction to tread work and learn the fundamentals of sustainable trail maintenance. Expect hard work, dirty hands, and the satisfaction of making a lasting improvement to the trails you love.

We hope to see you there!
