Vernal Pool Visit

  • Coburn Woods 118 Russell Rd Skowhegan, ME, 04976 United States (map)

Join wildlife biologist and founder of Maine Big Night, Greg LeClair, for our annual visit to the Coburn Woods vernal pool. Vernal pools are temporary, fish-free wetlands that are critical nurseries for species like wood frogs and spotted salamanders. At Coburn Woods, in many years we also have an abundance of fairy shrimp! What these wetlands lack in permanence, they make up for in ecological impact - supporting entire life cycles for amphibians and fueling spring food webs.

Greg will help us see firsthand all the life this pool supports.

Please be prepared for up to one mile of walking (round trip), most of which will be on the newly improved forest management road, followed by a short stretch through the woods off-trail. We recommend waterproof boots and practicing tick safety. No dogs, please.
