Ever wander down a trail and wonder, "Who decided to put this here? Why does the trail go this way?" Come learn the basics of trail design and layout, including how to measure trail grades and what goes into creating a sustainable trail. Leaders include Rachel from Somerset Woods Trustees, Burke from Skowhegan Outdoors, and Julia from Maine Appalachian Trail Club. You will also get the opportunity to tour the MATC Trail Center facility!
This hands-on session will introduce trail terminology, pre-tread decision-making, and the partnerships that go into building and maintaining trails. You’ll walk away knowing the difference between channelized and sheet flow, tread and corridor, how to measure grade, and some of the basic questions to ask when considering why a trail is laid out the way it is. This session is perfect for anyone in the community wanting to learn about trail basics.
This is Day 1 of a two-day trail learning program intended to get our local community outdoors and connected to the benefits trails bring. Day 2 will be student-focused and is not open to the public, but if you are interested in supporting this effort email Rachel@Somersetwoodstrustees.org for more information.
