Location: Solon, Somerset County, Maine
Position Description: Somerset Woods Trustees (SWT) is one of Maine’s oldest land trusts, dedicated to conserving the forests, waters, and wildlife of Somerset County for public benefit. SWT manages thousands of acres of conserved land, providing recreational opportunities and protecting critical habitats. This internship offers a unique blend of front-country and backcountry conservation work—60% supporting SWT programs and 40% stewarding the remote Pierce Pond Watershed for PPWT. Interns will gain hands-on experience in trail maintenance, water quality monitoring, invasive species management, and community engagement while developing confidence in independent fieldwork. Primary Tasks:
• Perform brushing, blowdown removal (chainsaw), and trail marking
• Assist with volunteer trail workdays and infrastructure projects (i.e. boardwalks, steps, and cribbing)
• Conduct bi-weekly water quality monitoring and aquatic species surveys
• Support brook trout research projects in partnership with Maine IF&W and UMF
• Implement invasive species management plans at priority preserves • Repair and maintain picnic tables, benches, kiosks, and signage
