RAINDATE: SATURDAY, JUNE 21
Volunteer with Somerset Woods Trustees to help clean up the Route 2 roadside along the Kennebec River. The purpose of this event is to help clean up the trash along this section of the Kennebec River and learn more about the properties we steward in this area and opportunities to volunteer with us.
Route 2 is a busy road and sees its fair share of trash that falls off or is thrown from the many cars that pass by. With the turn outs along the Skowhegan section of the Kennebec River there is an even greater chance of litter making its way onto the roadside and eventually into the river.
Participants should expect to arrive for a safety chat, a volunteer sign-in, the distribution of PPE and tools (high visibility gear, gloves, trash bags, etc.), and then to split off in groups/teams to pick up trash along the riverside.
This event is open to everyone! We will be picking up trash alongside a busy roadway however, so exercise your best judgement if you plan on bringing young children. Everyone will be expected to wear high-visibility vests and be placed in teams of two or more for safety.
To participate, sign up for this event here. We ask that all participants RSVP so we can prepare the necessary tools and PPE.
Directions: Search for Kennebec Banks Rest Area, 264 Canaan Rd, Skowhegan, ME 04976. Along Route 2, heading west into Skowhegan or east towards Canaan. The Kennebec Banks Rest Area is across the road from the school bus lot.
