VOLUNTEER: Black Ash Flower Hunt

  • Weston Woods & Waters Weston Ave. Madison, ME 04950 (map)

DATE CHANGE DUE TO RAINY FORECAST!

The purpose of this event is to identify and mark seed bearing black (aka brown) ash trees for the Somerset Woods Trustees seed collection program. The seed collection program aims to collect seeds from black ash across SWT properties and preserves as a response to the continued spread of emerald ash borer.

Participants should expect to arrive for a quick safety chat, a discussion about black ash flowers and the SWT seed collection program, before heading down into the woods to mark trees. Please be aware that it will be about a mile walk out to the ash stands, with a steep descent down to the floodplain where the ash are located.

This event is open to individuals of all ages! Participants should wear rubber boots or some other waterproof footwear as the area we will be in will be very wet. If you have a personal pair of binoculars please bring them with you to help identify the correct flowers. All participants should expect to sign a sign-in sheet and waiver upon arrival.

Directions: You will want to go to the Weston Woods and Waters trailhead on Weston Avenue. From there we will walk to the black ash stand.
